The Challenge

One workout. A very wide range of screens.

Sprint 8 is a 20-minute high-intensity interval training program that guides users through alternating 30- and 90-second intervals. A “sweat score” measures exertion and adds a gamification element designed to motivate users throughout the workout.

Because Sprint 8 could be accessed across Matrix cardio equipment, the experience needed to work on consoles ranging from roughly 3 inches to 26 inches wide.

The challenge was to create a consistent, intuitive workout experience across dramatically different displays and equipment while keeping setup and active workout information easy to understand.

The Approach

Evaluate

Test the existing Sprint 8 experience and gather user feedback to identify opportunities for improvement.

Prototype

Create interactive concepts that could run directly on the cardio equipment through the console web browser.

Test

Evaluate UI and UX options across different equipment types and screen sizes with users.

Refine

Use feedback to improve the interface, then collaborate with development on implementation.

Research & Discovery

Testing the experience where it would actually be used.

Testing the experience where it would actually be used. I began by testing the existing Sprint 8 UI/UX and gathering feedback from users.

Rather than evaluating redesign concepts only on a desktop, I created clickable InVision prototypes that could be opened directly through the web browser on Matrix cardio consoles.

This allowed users to interact with different UI/UX options on the actual equipment and helped us evaluate how the experience performed across different screen sizes.

  • A design that worked on one console wasn’t enough. The experience needed to remain intuitive across the entire product family.

Design Decisions

Consistency without Using Identical Layouts

The same Sprint 8 workout needed to work across screens ranging from approximately 3 inches to 26 inches wide. That meant the interface could not simply be scaled proportionally from one display to another.

The goal was to preserve the parts of the experience users needed to recognize (workout setup, interval information, progress, and feedback) while allowing the layout to adapt to the capabilities and constraints of each console.

Making the Active Workout Easy to Read

Sprint 8 alternates between short periods of high-intensity effort and recovery. During the workout, users need to understand where they are in the interval without spending unnecessary attention interpreting the interface.

The experience needed to keep timing, workout state, and progress clear while users were actively exercising. The sweat score added another layer of feedback, bringing a gamification element into the experience without replacing the core workout information.

Prototyping, Testing & Delivery

Building the prototypes so they could run directly on Matrix consoles made it possible to evaluate the designs in context rather than relying on assumptions about how they would translate to different equipment.

I refined the UI based on user feedback and collaborated with the development team as the updated experience moved into implementation.

This approach helped keep design decisions grounded in the realities of the hardware, screen size, and workout environment.

The Final Experience

One recognizable workout experience across the Matrix cardio ecosystem.

One recognizable workout experience across the Matrix cardio ecosystem. The updated Sprint 8 experience created a more consistent look, feel, and interaction model across Matrix consoles while remaining flexible enough to accommodate very different display sizes.

Users could move between equipment and encounter a familiar setup and workout experience rather than having to relearn the program for each console.

Outcome & Reflection

The redesigned Sprint 8 experience established a more consistent UI/UX across Matrix cardio equipment and was implemented in collaboration with the development team.

The project also required me to create a matching Sprint 8 website, extending the updated visual experience beyond the equipment itself. Talks were started with commercial gyms about applying the visual experience into their interior design with sections of their space being solely dedicated to Sprint 8.

Consistency doesn’t require every interface to look exactly the same. Designing Sprint 8 across such a wide range of displays reinforced the importance of identifying the elements that define an experience and allowing the surrounding layout to adapt.

The result is a system that can respond to different hardware constraints while still feeling familiar to the user.
