Intelligent Training Console

UX/UI

Intelligent Training Console

The first strength console to complete the on-screen workout experience for gyms providing Matrix cardio and strength equipment to its clients.

product goals

  • Create UX/UI for a console on strength pieces (leg presses, bicep curls, etc.) that can:

    • Instruct the exerciser how to properly use the equipment.

    • Follow a multi-week workout program based on their fitness goals and track their progress.

    • Guide new users through a fitness test used to build out their personalized workout programming.

    • Allow them to interact with Matrix’s personal training app (see Personal Trainer Portal).

process

  • Ran usability testing sessions with basic graphics on an iPad that sat in a cardboard housing to simulate the console experience. This helped inform hardware decisions as well as sizing and color combinations of graphics on-screen.

  • Wireframed and designed UI for clickable prototypes in Invision for a secondary round of testing on chosen hardware and to hand off to development team.

  • Refined UI based on user feedback and collaborated with development team on updates.

  • Observed people using units at a test installation site (YMCA) and made UX suggestions for future updates.

takeaways

  • Users enjoyed having something large enough to track their time and reps that they could see out of their peripheral vision while maintaining good form on the equipment. During testing we found it was optimal to have large graphics with high color contrast so users could see the information at various angles and lighting conditions.

  • This was the first project I noticed a big difference between cardio and strength users; cardio users take the time to set up their workout on screen and enjoy the workout programs and entertainment options because they tend to spend more time on that type of equipment. While observing people using the ITC at the YMCA, strength users are spending less than 10 minutes per machine and are more likely to jump right into their workout and then leave without wanting to log in or follow a tracked program, etc. For this reason, we made a quickstart mode that just tracks time, sets, and reps.
