Premium LED Console

All the engaging graphics and features of a touchscreen console, translated onto an 8000-pixel LED light display.

product goals

  • Capture the engaging experience of a touchscreen console and translate it onto a large format LED console.

  • All user flows need to be accommodated for: everything from machine installation and setup to maintenance/backend flows to gym staff checking usage and troubleshooting to the workout experience for gym clients.

process

  • Researched other LED interfaces and manual hardware (this may have included a deep dive into 8-bit video games).

  • Prototyped an experience on a touchscreen to determine button placement but found a paper prototype was closer to the feel of pushing physical buttons multiple times rather than tapping a screen. The change showed a difference in behavior and helped determine the location of certain buttons.

  • Tested various timing, animation, transitions and font choices (in multiple languages) that impacted how users received and interpreted information.

  • Created and tested different versions of icons and graphics to be used across all consoles in all languages, ensuring they communicated their meaning successfully.

  • Designed high fidelity, clickable mock-ups and in-depth, annotated diagram flows for UX/UI so the development team in Asia could execute with fewer questions and problems.

takeaways

  • Even though it is a “less tech-y” screen, the size and engaging colors and graphics were pleasing to users (especially the Landmarks program with different locations

  • Redundant functionality was essential as we found, particularly on the elliptical and stair climber machines, users preferred the controls provided at the bottom of the console rather than the ATM-style buttons on top. Treadmill and bike users reached the console/ATM-style buttons more naturally.

  • On personal note, designing for this pixelated hardware brought me back to childhood - it felt like playing with a Light Brite but with way more options and capabilities!
