ONYX Console Collection
Inspired by luxury automobiles, the team sought to create these cardio pieces with premium materials, a large touchscreen console, two small touchscreens on the handgrips for controls, and long rails of lighting along the side arms and running deck.

Elevate the cardio workout experience with cutting edge touchscreen technology, lighting, and sleek, upscale industrial design.
Create an optimal default experience, but also provide other layout options for handgrips and main console to choose from during a person’s customization of their workout.
Format for treadmill, elliptical, bike, and stair climber and their respective screen sizes.

Usertested 3D printed hardware with various button locations to inform UX decisions and industrial design team on material considerations.
Wireframed controls and workout programming and tested them with users on a treadmill, bike, elliptical, and stair climber to see how they’d behave at different speeds.
Designed final UI based on user feedback and wireframes.
Tested various patterns of haptic feedback on handgrips with users with finalized UI and gave feedback to industrial design team.
Recommended lighting settings for communication, such as colors to match high vs. low intensity portions of interval training workouts and flashing red for a treadmill that needs servicing.

When conducting research with/ for other teams, consider how they’d like their data received and plan accordingly.
I initially thought all the bells and whistles and options for customization would be overwhelming to people, but it became clear that with the more premium look, feel, and technology they were actually eager to spend the time personalizing their workout experience.
Commercial gyms with higher membership fees have enjoyed being able to provide this experience as it makes their clients feel they’re getting more value out of their membership.
